Surftech's Fusion Dual Core - The Best of Both Worlds
Nowadays we are seeing more and more surfboard companies push the envelope with surfboard design, combining science and style to create boards that are not only more eco-friendly and durable, but also still have plenty of performance and versatility.
Although many experienced love the feel of the "tried-and-true" polyurethane/polyester construction of a surfboard, we've noticed that with all of the advance in surfboard technology over the years, people are starting to step outside of their comfort zone. And the results have been pouring in... the boards really WORK!
That is why we are stoked to bring in some new cutting edge surfboard technology from the guys at Surftech.
Surftech combined the best properties of both Poly and EPS surfboards into a "Frankenstein" type of surfboard construction, in which they dubbed the Fusion Dual-Core. The idea is based on feedback from all types of surfers as they describe what they like/don't like about poly and EPS boards. Traditional poly boards absorb vibrations a bit better than EPS, while allowing you to dig the rail deeper and have more hold in and out of turns. An EPS board offers a bit more float thanks to it's less dense foam, allowing surfers to go a bit shorter with the board. The additional float adds paddle power which increases wave count and aids in speed generation on the wave.
With the Fusion Dual Core technology Surftech combined PU foam rails with an EPS foam center using an all new material, Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU), to bond them together. The TPU has a high abrasion resistance, high shear strength, and most importantly a high elasticity. The TPU adds performance and a reflux pattern with an incredible ability to transfer the energy of your turns to the fins, combined with the float/paddle power of an EPS board and the smooth feel of a PU board, the Fusion Dual-Core is definitely the best of both worlds!!
We are currently carrying the following models featuring Surftech's Fusion Dual Core technology. Come by the shop and check these things out before they are gone!
SHARPEYE MODERN 2
The Modern 2/ Fusion Dual-Core was designed to be a cross breed between the famous MR Twin of the 80's and the high performance thrusters of today. Felipe wanted a board for training in small mushy conditions and he asked for something different than he rides on tour. The Modern 2 has incredible speed and drive due to the combination of concave and rail shape. This board will change the way you surf small mushy to head high waves.
SHARPEYE DISCO INFERNO
The Disco Inferno Fusion Dual-Core is a performance shape that will handle better waves with the float and response of EPS combine with the feel of PU. With a similar bottom contour and rocker as the famous Sharpeye Disco, the Disco Inferno has some minor changes to increase the drive and control in larger surf. The Disco Inferno is ideal sized shorter than your regular shortboard.
Warm Winds team rider, Sam Levine ( saml1230 ) has been riding this board for a few months, and had this to say:
"I tested this stick for the first time in some chest to shoulder high beach break and it worked very well. Lots of hold on the face of the wave but some good release in the tail when you need it, very light weight board, it might be affected by strong winds or chop, but in glassy conditions it works great. The second time I used it, was a reef break, that’s where it excelled, very easy to paddle lots of rail to engage for turns but can snap easy of the lip. It pumps fast and responds well. Even worked well on the smaller waves, just a lot of rocker on this model, if you want something a little easier, just a little less rocker would be great for the point-breaks. Over all fast, fun and responsive, just not for the choppy or windy days."
CHANNEL ISLANDS ROCKET 9
This is what pro surfer Dane Gudaauskas had to say about the board: "The Rocket 9 Fusion Dual-Core is suited to your average waves like we find around California. It works great in beach breaks because it can be skate when you want to generate speed, but then you step back on the tail and can absolutely hammer some vert wall. I also think that with the shorter nature, it fits really well in the tighter transitions of beach breaks. The optimal range for this board would be 2 to 6 foot beach breaks."
CHANNEL ISLANDS THE CODE
Channel Island's team rider and 1977 World Champ Shaun Tomson collaborated with Surftech on this design for the young at heart that craves a performance board but still wants to get the most out of the average waves they often find themselves riding. The Code Fusion Dual-Core features more volume, which along with the DC technology allows for easy paddling and increased wave count. A single concave under the front foot allows for punchy drive on takeoffs and the double concave blending to a vee provides lift and easy rail-to-rail transitions.
CHANNEL ISLANDS MINI
Channel Islands Surfboards is pleased to announce a surfboard design collaboration with Kalani Robb and MINI. By incorporating our common passion for performance and having fun we developed a versatile surfboard that performs in an unusually wide range of conditions. The MINI offers an ultra relaxed rocker, wider nose, wider squash tail, thinned rails, and aggressive single to double concave with vee out the tail. Taking a page from Al's popular Skinny Fish design, the MINI incorporates all the speed and wave catching ability of a traditional fish with the performance benefits of a squash tail. Designed to work best in knee to head high surf. This board is best positioned as your go to groveler in your quiver, ridden 3"-6" shorter than your height.
